Severe weather patterns within the past couple of months have caused widespread disaster in different countries, from the severe blizzard in the U.S. to flooding rains in Italy and most recently the devastating cyclone in the Philippines. With over 5,000 lives lost so far and the land destroyed, many people have lost their hope. We must use our compassion and wisdom to help the survivors recover their hope and help them to get back on their feet again. This is why Tzu Chi volunteers have initiated the Cash-for-Work program to help the survivors clean up their homes and community as a means to start the recovery process, both mentally and physically. Tzu Chi volunteers are also ready to help churches recover so the people can return to their spiritual home. Regardless of religion, everyone must work together so that we can bring peace to society. We will learn how to curb our desires and harmonize our minds, and this way, we will be able to correct our actions and reverse the climate changes.
I am reminded by this lecture to learn from disasters and purify our minds. I try to use the same compassion and wisdom when facing challenges at work. Truly we can accomplish something big only when we're working together as a team, and I'm grateful for all my collaborators at work who have helped me finish my projects. Conflicts arise when people want different things, but I try my best to remind myself not to be so greedy and believe that everyone has a good heart as Master does. Our world will be a much better place if we can inspire the love and compassion from the people we interact with everyday at work, at school, at home, anywhere, and not wait until a major disaster to happen to do this.
